Tango

The tango is a hot, sultry dance full of strutting proud men and softly flowing women. There is a continuous movement similar to other ballroom dances, but there can also be quick flicks and strong, jerky head movements.

Unlike other ballroom, the facial features play a strong role in the dance of tango. The faces of the dancers have a quiet dignity and proud bearing. In learning how to tango dance, one learns how to stay strong and upright.

When Buenos Aires became the capital of Argentina, immigrants flocked to its newly found prosperity. African, Indian, Spanish and South American cultures combined to provide these homesick people with a form of expression to while away the lonely evening hours. The word 'tango' is thought to come from an African drum beat 'tan-go'. And the dance tells the story of sensually charged emotions between man and woman.

While it has many similarities to other ballroom dances, the particular movements of the tango are different. There are some of the flowing movements, when both dancers follow each other's movement, but there are also quick jerky head changes from side to side as if the dancers are slapping each other with stiff upper bodies. The music itself is a mixture between African drum beats and Spanish and Indian melodies. Legs are kicked with high, quick raises.

The harsh, wild dance was so popular that it soon became exported all over the world and many people have learned how to tango dance. Finding itself in Paris by the early 1900s and then later in America. Here, it was cleaned up and much of the meaning and nuances were lost or changed. The quick pace and fast movement attracting the younger generation who up until then only had the more sedate dances.

Man and woman partners work around the dance floor in a generally counterclockwise way. They can have forward and backward movements which are accentuated by firm foot steps. The man's role is that of brooding dominance. He is angry with the woman and is trying to control her. They kick their feet out to the sides as they in turns, argue then make up.

Tango costumes are sparkly sequined affairs for the ladies. Plenty of red outfits and dark colors. The dresses are very fitted with cut-away sections and the skirts can be short and cut away. The short skirts show off the leg kicks and quick feet turns. Men wear fitted, formal clothes in dark colors. Sometimes one piece with a subtle sparkle on the sides. The clothes and dance movements emphasize the emotion in the dance and it can be very intense to learn.

Learning to dance increases your pulse rate and gets your body moving. It gets you out of the house and out having fun. You can choose to join any type of dance that you like and experience variety of movement. You no longer have to get into those gym clothes and head off to your local health center every week.

When you learn to dance you have variety. You no longer need to do the same repetitive movements over and over again. Your pulse quickens and your heart beat pumps along with the beat of the music as you are engerised and incentivised!

You can learn to dance at home with a dvd or at your local town hall or gym. You don't have to be stuck in the same room on a piece of equipment like an exercise bike or rowing machine week after week. The dancing activity alone stimulates both your mind and body. You don't need to be plugged into headphones for example. It also allows you to experience new types of tunes. My friend had no idea how great some types of music are until she went to her local evening dance classes!

There are types of dance suit to all types of people of all shapes and sizes. Do you want a fast-paced workout with lots of different partners? Would you like to have private tuition for a dance at a work do or wedding? Then there is a type of dance for you. And what a great way to go out and meet new friends! How many times at the gym do you actually make eye contact with anyone? At a dance lesson, you actually have to hold the person!

Depending on what sort of style you choose, will determine what you wear. You can decide to choose something which requires some highly specialised equipment or clothing. If you choose to learn tap dancing then you will probably need professional tap shoes. For ballroom dancing both men and women get to wear extremely glamorous sparkly sequin-festooned clothes. No need for smelly trainers any more!

One idea is to not purchase all the expensive things before you really decide to stick with your choice because you could be left with all the gear but not want to go to the lessons anymore. Try getting second hand things or thinking creatively to make your own accessories.

Learning to how dance can be quite easy on the wallet. You can buy excellent videos or DVDs that teach you the basic steps.  With the right music and a willing partner, you can master these steps in the privacy of your home. Above all, you can really enjoy yourself! It's fun!
